Introduction


RECESS is an acronym for Research Center for Soft Soil which is a new Research and Development (R & D) initiative by Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (UTHM). Based on the concept practised at Soft Soil Test Site at Bothkennar, Scotland. Its establishment was officiated by Tan Sri Dato' Ir Hj Zaini bin Omar, the Director General Public Works Department Malaysia on 28th January 2004.

The UTHM campus is constructed on soft soil and its expansion and development have aroused concern due to the existence of soft foundation soil. Thus, RECESS, was established in order to carry out field trials and at soft soil areas. It has also become the national center for soft soil research. Exposure to new applied technology and full-scale testing make RECESS a valuate  meeting place for industrialists and researchers to share information in dealing with risks arising from construction on soft soil.
