The Centre for Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMCcenter) under the Research Centre for Applied Electromagnetics, Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (UTHM) has recently received international recognition as a world-class laboratory.  The EMCcenter was awarded the MS ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation certificate under the Laboratory Accreditation Scheme Malaysia (SAMM), Department of Standards Malaysia, which takes effect for three years beginning 15 December 2014.

The head of EMCcenter Prof. Dr Mohd Zarar Mohd Jenu said that the EMCcenter has undergone a three-part audit process before the accreditation was conferred to ensure that the Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) test was competent in both management and technical aspects. He emphasized that the EMCenter in UTHM is the only lab in a Malaysian university that has successfully achieved the MS ISO/IEC 17025 standard in the field of Electromagnetic Compatibility. “We are actively involved in studies and tests involving the effects of electromagnetic waves toward equipment and humankind. Apart from testing services, EMCcenter also provides research,  training,  consultancy, troubleshooting and computer simulation works”.

The MS ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation means that the EMCcenter is not only internationally recognized for its high competency in carrying out EMC tests, but also for its ability to deliver credible test reports. Now, the test reports issued by EMCcenter can be used by clients to export electrical and electronic products to international markets such as Europe, America and Japan.  The EMCcenter aims to support the growth of the electrical and electronic industry in Malaysia to ensure that Malaysian products are able to penetrate international markets.

Staffs involved in making this accreditation a success are Mohd Rostam Anuar, Mohd Erdi Ayob, Sharifunazri Johadi and Miskiah Muhamad Ihsan.

The EMCcenter plans to expand its test scope to include automotive components and defense in the near future. It is hoped that the Malaysian government will be able to provide grants for the construction of the buildings and equipment needed.
