Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (UTHM) would like to congratulate Ir. Dr. Goh Hui Hwang on being one of the winners of the Ten Outstanding Young Malaysian (TOYM) Awards 2014.
The awards accord recognitions to young Malaysians whose dedication to their profession or life undertakings has resulted in exceptional achievement, in the form of significant contributions to the progress or welfare of the community at large and to the advancement of their respective field of endeavor.

The award will also to create public awareness and give proper recognition to the outstanding achievements of the honorees, thereby serving as inspirational examples and incentives to the young Malaysian to forge ahead to greater heights of achievements in the spirit of selfless dedication for the further development of the community.

This year, more than 100 individuals were nominated and 30 finalists were selected for an interview with a panel of judges in Kuala Lumpur. The top 10 honourees were announced at the award ceremony on 12 November 2014, in the State Hall in Penang.

Ir. Dr. Goh Hui Hwang, an associate professor from Faculty of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, was the award recipient in the ‘Academic Accomplishment/ Leadership’ category.

“I feel proud to be one of the top 10 honourees. At the same time, it means I have more responsibilities now,” said Goh, an academic in the engineering field who hails from Kuching, Sarawak.

Goh attributed it to his involvement in Engineering Accreditation Council (EAC) under the Board of Engineers, Malaysia (BEM), which bestowed a lot in Malaysia's securing of a signatory place in the Washington Accord.

This recognition is utmost important to the engineering education in Malaysia as graduates from accredited engineering degree programmes from signatory countries are considered meeting the academic practice in engineering at the international level.

With this achievement, all engineering degree qualifications accredited by the Board of Engineers, Malaysia are recognized in countries such as the United State of America, United Kingdom, Australia, Japan, Canada and other countries. As a panel member of academic accreditation, Goh also inspects engineering courses offered by public and private universities and colleges before conferring them accreditation.

Apart from engineering, UTHM – thanks to its vicinity to Endau Rompin National Park – is also venturing into the theater of operations of renewable energy.

“Our university is the initiative to venture into this area. We are going towards the commission of a sustainable campus, which estimates its own carbon emission and put in an endeavor to reduce it. We are as well collaborating with Endau Rompin National Park on this renewable energy drive. Pretty soon people with renewable energy solutions would come into the solutions as we are expecting to substitute the old facilities with renewable energy.”

On top of his engineering practice and research activities, Goh has been actively involved in community services through the Institution of Engineers Malaysia (IEM) Southern branch and IEM Student Section UTHM.
