For Postgraduates Programmes

  1. Applicants should possess at least a second class honours degree @ equivalent qualification in any related disciplines
  2. A minimum of CGPA 2.30 (for master programme depending on whether by research or coursework)
  3. However applicants with lower qualifications but with relevant experiences to the proposed study will also be considered.

English Language Requirements

  1. In addition to the required academic qualifications, you will have to demonstrate a level of proficiency in the language as part of the entrance selection criteria.

Academic English Courses

Undergraduate students can choose from a range of Academic English modules. They can also join our Academic English Language short courses and tutorials that are offered by the University during the academic semester. More information is available from the Academic Management Office.

Postgraduate students can register to attend the Academic English course offered by the University in order to improve their writing, reading, listening and speaking skills  More information is available from the Centre for Graduate Studies.

Student Pass and Visa Requirements

Entry Visa

All international students are required to obtain a visa before entering Malaysia. Application for a visa can be made at any Immigration Attaché Office, Malaysian Consulate, High Commission Office or Embassy in the country of origin of the student. Students from countries that do not have Malaysian Consulate may apply for a visa at the British Consulate in the respective countries. (Please refer to the Malaysian Immigration Department website)

Student Pass

Any foreigner who wishes to study in Malaysia is required to obtain a Student Pass. A Student Pass is an approved document issued by the Malaysian Immigration Department for International students to be in Malaysia for education purposes.

The Student Pass is only valid for the duration of your study at UTHM. You will be required  to apply for a new Student Pass if you change university.

Application for the Student Pass can only be made after you have registered with the University and it will take approximately 14 working days to be processed by the Malaysian Immigration Department.

Documents required for the student pass application are as follows:-

  • A copy of international passport, inclusive of the hard cover page and all the used pages (with 5 years valid)
  • Two (2) pieces of passport size photographs
  • A copy of Offer Letter from UTHM
  • A release Letter from previous institution (if any)
  • A termination letter from previous employer (for employment pass holder)
  • Medical Examination Report (issued by UTHM Health Centre)
    Insurance Cover

Fees regarding Students Pass are as follows:

Student Pass     : RM60.00 (equivalent to USD25)
Multiple Entry Visa    : RM6.00 – RM100.00 (equivalent to USD2~USD35)                                                                     (According to country)
Duty Stamp    : RM10.00 (equivalent to USD5)
Application Forms   : RM2.00   (equivalent to USD1)

                

Personal Bond

The Malaysian Immigration Department also requires UTHM to sign a Personal Bond for and on behalf of the applicants/students binding the University for a certain said sum. Students are required to pay the costs of the personal bond during registration.

The fee applicable is as indicated in your offer letter. The amount will be reimbursed after the completion of your study at UTHM.

Dependant Pass

Only immediate family members of an international student (spouse & children only) will be considered for a Social Visit Pass and shall be issued according to the validity of the respective Student Pass.

Documents required for the Dependant Pass application are as follows:-
A copy of international passport, inclusive of the hard cover page and all the used pages
Two (2) pieces of passport size photographs
Supporting documents of family ties (e.g. Certificate of Marriage)
A cover letter supporting the application from the University
Medical Insurance

 Renewal of Student Pass

Existing international students are required to present their passport to the Corporate and International Relations Office at least 1 month before the expiry date.

In the event of overstaying:

  1. Students will be required to be present at the Immigration Office and to justify the reason for not renewing their Student Pass on time
  2. Any penalties incurred shall be borne by the student 

Medical Examination Scheme

  1. Medical examination is compulsory for all international students planning to stay for their study in Malaysia for a period of more than 6 months.
  2. Medical examination can only be done at the University Health Centre, any government hospitals or any of the University panel clinics before registration date.
  3. For the purpose of verification, the University reserves the right to conduct further medical examination to any of its students
  4. Costs of the original and subsequent medical examination, including costs of tests, reports and examination fees are solely the responsibility of the students.

Insurance Scheme

  1. All international students must have a valid insurance cover during their study in Malaysia.
  2. Insurance cover is also compulsory to any family members or relatives that live with the students for more than 6 months.
  3. The costs for the Insurance Cover shall be borne by the students during registration.
  4. The Ministry of Higher Education has set a minimum annual premium amount of not less than RM300.00 for each student as the cost for insurance cover.
  5. The Insurance cover must be effective on the date of registration .
  6. International students will be insured by companies or insurance agents approved by the Malaysian Ministry of Higher Education.  The Insurance cover for international students must provide the following benefits :-
    1. Outpatient treatment
    2. Inpatient treatment
    3. Personal accidents and death
    4. Repatriation

What to Pack?

The items that you must bring along with you to Malaysia and UTHM:

  1. A valid passport and other identification documents, such as identify card and birth certificate
  2. An air-ticket
  3. An offer letter
  4. Original documents of residence in Student Accommodation
  5. Cash
  6. Any prescribed drugs and medicine that you need to take.
  7. Personal items, such as toiletries, bath towels, bed sheets, pillow cases, electrical accessories, etc.
  8. Some recent passport-sized photographs
  9. Utensils (e.g. mug, fork, spoon, etc)
  10. Sports equipment (e.g. tennis racket, etc)
  11. National costume of your country
  12. If you already have a computer notebook, then bring it along.

Arrival in Malaysia

Major international flights will arrive from oversea destinations at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) in Sepang which is approximately 300km from UTHM Campus. Upon arrival you may book a taxi from the airport lounge straight to UTHM. Taxis from the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) to UTHM range between USD80 (day) and USD100 (night).

The international flights to Johor will transit in Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) for a domestic flight transfer to Sultan Ismail International Airport, Johor Bahru, which is approximately 80km from UTHM Campus. Taxis from the Sultan Ismail International Airport to UTHM range between USD40 (day) and USD50 (night).

Adjusting To Life In Malaysia

If this is your first time in Malaysia, you may need some time to adjust to a new living and study environment especially due to Malaysia’s unique customs and cultures. However, there are a number of tips to assist you to settle down to a more familiar surroundings.

Academic Advisor/Counselor

All students will be assigned to an Academic Advisor during their study in the University to assist you with issues and problems related to your academic progress. You may consult your Academic Advisor during the normal semester period based on their availability. More information can be obtained from your Faculty General Office.

Orientation Programme

Student Orientation Week is a compulsory programme held during the first week after registration for all new students to take part. The programme will involve a number of activities to familiarise new students with the university, it’s surrounding as well as information on services offered at the university.

International Student Society

All International students are encouraged to join the International Student Society where you could take part in multinational and cultural programmes. The society is registered with the Student Affairs Office under the advisory of the Corporate and International Relations Office.

Open Your Mind

It is important for you to be emotionally prepared when arriving in a new environment far from your family and your home country. You must be ready to acclimatize to the new customs and cultures in Malaysia which may be different from what you are familiar with.
