Early May 2012 (3rd May 2012 until 5th May 2012), the Faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering (FKAAS) management and FKAAS students, University Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (UTHM) had the pleasure in hosting a three day study tour visit from the HK PolyU comprising 80 students and 8 lecturers from their Department of Building Services Engineering. This visit was part of the activities under the UTHM-HK PolyU MoU which was signed in 2010. The HK PolyU delegates were headed by the prominent Professor C.K. Chow who is a frequent visitor to UTHM.
The three day visit was filled with activities that were intended to fulfill the objectives of the MoU, which can only be achieved through better understandings between the two universities. The first visit was to the University library whereupon the HK delegates were treated to a welcoming dance by the University's Warisan Dance Team with the 'Kompang' music accompaniment at the lobby. The study tour program was then officially launched by Deputy Vice Canselor (Academic and International) Professor Ir. Dr. Abdul Aziz Dato' Abdul Samad, Representing the Vice Chancellor at the Jemaah Hall. During the launching ceremony, audience was treated to cheerful speeches from both university representatives; (Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ahmad Tarmizi Abd. Karim, Dean of Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty), notwithstanding a dance entertainment on the special zapin dance from UTHM dancers. To give the HK students some ideas of what it feels like to study in UTHM, HK students visited selected university facilities and FKAAS laboratories. HK students had "learning" sessions provided through demonstrations by UTHM laboratory instructors. The first day visit came to an end with a dinner hosted by HK PolyU at the Katerina Hotel in Batu Pahat which was well attended by UTHM students and staff. Diners were entertained by talented singers and dancers from both universities. A visit to the heritage city of Malacca was arranged on the second day. At the first stop, HK delegates who were accompanied by a group of UTHM staff and students visited the Malacca Batik House and had the opportunity to try their hands at batik painting, much to the enjoyment of everyone. Other places of interest that were visited included the A Famosa Fortress and the nearby museums. The famous river cruise made the day for everyone as well as walking along the Jongker Street at night. On the last day students from both universities further foster their friendships and had much fun playing rugby and some traditional Malaysian games. While the students were enjoying themselves, UTHM and HK PolyU lecturers had a fruitful meeting on their future MoU/MoA activities chaired by Assoc. Prof. Dr Zainal Abidin Akasah who is the responsible personnel for the UTHM-HK PolyU MoU. The meeting was also attended by representatives from other institutions who wanted to learn from UTHM experience in initiating successful international collaborations, i.e., the Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah Polytechnic and the Sri Gading Kolej Kemahiran Tinggi MARA. The closing ceremony for the study tour program was held on the UTHM Rugby field with prize giving, exchange of souvenirs and a short closing speech by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Zainal Abidin Akasah. Everyone was positive that this study tour which comprised the largest number of visitors to date has indeed brought the two institutions closer and created a better understanding not only on academic matter but also on cultural issues which would lead to more meaningful collaboration activities between the two institutions in the future. |
